The technology can be improved by using nanocarbon materials such as fullerenes, graphene or carbon nanotubes and surface treatment lasers to enhance the properties of steel.

The Ross scientists chose carbon black as the nanomaterial, which is obtained by producing fullerenes in the arc discharge of graphite electrodes. After laser treatment, the hardness of iron coated with nanostructured carbon increased by more than five times compared to common technical steel, and the friction coefficient of the reinforced material was 20-30% lower than that of the initial sample. In addition, laser heating does not cause deformation of the product, thus reducing the process flow, as there is no need to process additional metal products.
